Generally, elearning that takes a deep dive too quickly without connecting with the audience is a big no. Top that off with throwing random media at users like custard pies at a clown, it gets messy. Here are 3 basic tips to help you avoid disengaging your users. 1️⃣Avoid information dump If you overwhelm learners with too much information, the important messages will get lost, and they’ll actually remember less. Instead, focus on what you really want learners to take away and build your elearning around that. 2️⃣Don’t forget the 'why' If learners don’t see why they’re doing the elearning, they won’t engage. Telling or showing learners why this training matters and what’s in it for them is an essential foundation, and you need to do it quickly. 3️⃣Avoid media mishaps Elearning offers us an array of media types to use - carousels, interactive diagrams, and question types galore. But an exciting widget is wasted if used too much or incorrectly. Interactivity is really important - but this happens in the brain. Don’t fall for what Cammy Bean calls the ‘click clicky bling bling.’ Make design decisions based on what supports the learning the most. You’ll likely avoid all of these mistakes if you 100% focus on the purpose of your training. Who are the audience? What do they need? What will help them get there? What’s likely to engage them?
