Have you talked to your customers? Most business problems are really lack of customer understanding problems. Want to get more people to use your product or service? Talk to your customers. Want to figure out if your product is better than your competitors? Talk to your customers. Want to find why you are losing out on customers to your competition? Talk to your customers. Want to charge more for your product or service? Talk to your customers. Want to create the next innovative product or service? Wait for it... Yup, that's right: Talk to your customers. It's the first step to any successful company. You have to deeply understand that pain points that your potential customers have. And then solve them. (That's really what your product or service is the first place: the solution to your customer's problems). The sooner you put customer knowledge at the forefront of everything you do, The sooner you're on the path to a preeminent product or service. And then you can charge whatever you want for your product! #businessstrategy #customerinsight #research #UX

There and Back Again... The typical process is to take a Business Need (e.g. We need more customers) Then turn it into new features in a Product or Service that solve that Business Need. This is typically where UX gets involved. We need to make Feature X more usable to Customers so they do the thing that makes the Business more money. And so, as UX People, we focus on iterating the Product and making Feature X better. And yet, something is wrong. We have missed out on checking whether the Customers want the feature and whether the feature solves a problem they have in the first place! This is what I call "Solutions in search of user needs." Sounds familiar, right? Unfortunately, it's too true. This is why we have the AI-panacea features cropping up everywhere. We have the Solution (AI is the answer to everything!) We have the Business Case (People using our product = $$$) And we have a ton of people (Probably most of us) confused as to why the Search box just turned into an unhelpful AI and you can no longer use the Search box to search for content anymore (Real issue with a super popular App, which shall remain anonymous for the time being) The answer? Keep going down the path to understand your Customers. Figure out what problems or "Needs" they have Then come back to the Product and ensure it does that thing. Then come back to the Business to see how it impacts the goal (get more customers). It's, "There and Back Again," to quote the subtitle of The Hobbit. "You only talked to 10 people, it's not statistically significant, so it doesn't matter!" Infuriating, right? Is it fair to apply quantitative criteria to qualitative data? NOPE! "Cross-system evaluation" is my term for taking data from one system (in this case, qualitative data) and applying the criteria for measuring the veracity of truth from another (quantitative data). Logical empiricism seeks objective truth and uses quantitative data to evaluate it. However, constructivism sees truth as subjective and context-dependent, making it more appropriate for evaluating qualitative data. So, the next time someone dismisses your qualitative findings, elevate the conversation to a broader discussion about what is True for your customers and your product/service. Discuss what you learned from your research and how it relates to creating the best experience for your customers. Let's move away from measuring apples with oranges and embrace the unique insights that qualitative research can provide. #qualitativeresearch #constructivism #logicalpositivism #customerexperience Image by Dall-E

The Qualitative Research "Impact Problem:" The current climate in Big Tech is still responding to several factors: The AI explosion, Layoffs in 2023 due to over-hiring during COVID, and a general tightening of budgets, despite record profits. Qualitative Researchers feel we have been hit especially hard with layoffs and coming to terms with a new challenge: How do we demonstrate our Value and "Prove" our Impact to the Business? This article delves into what led up to the Impact Problem and identifies three strategies to approach informing Impact. Most importantly, it's time for a paradigm shift of what Qualitative Impact can and should look like As we translate human insights into Business Impact. #ux #research #impact #businessmetrics #paradigmshift https://lnkd.in/eDJ3ucMU
