How many participants should you run in a usability study? Is five enough, too few, or too many? How can you know? Because the appropriate sample size for discovery studies depends on two factors, there is no one magic number that will be appropriate for all research contexts. When estimating a sample size requirement for a discovery study, one (sample) size does not fit all (research contexts). #ux #uxr #userexperience #uxresearch #userresearch

This table shows what you can expect to get in a formative usability study with a given sample size. For example, with 3 participants you’d expect to detect 88% of problems that, given the study specifics (type of participants, task set, environments), would affect 50% of users, but you’d only expect to detect 14% of problems that would affect 5% of users. #ux #uxresearch #userexperience #uxr #userresearch

Many UX methods are specialized adaptations of methods with roots in other fields, well back into history. When you understand the fields where the methods originally came from and how they’ve been adapted, you can more effectively use them in UX research. #ux #uxr #uxresearch #userexperience

What exactly does it mean for a website to appear cluttered? The everyday conception of clutter implies two components — needed objects that are disorganized and unneeded objects that should be discarded. For websites, the perception of clutter seems to be driven by a combination of design issues (e.g., use of white space) and content issues (e.g., presentation of irrelevant ads). There is a need for a standardized questionnaire that measures the perceived clutter of websites. This literature review provides a first step toward that goal. #ux #uxr #userexperience #userresearch #uxresearch #metrics

The early roots of currently used UX questionnaires date back over 100 years, with the most recent evolution of UX questionnaires happening in the 1970s. Using an evolutionary analogy, we can place UX questionnaires on three branches. #ux #uxresearch #uxr #userexperience

How do you measure tech savviness? The TAC-10 was developed to differentiate among low and high tech savviness for a general population of participants who are members of online research panels. TAC-10 classifications can be used as independent variables to understand the influence of tech savviness on other variables such as successful task completion rates. Unusual TAC-10 response patterns can be used to identify potentially problematic respondents. Here’s how to use the TAC-10 to measure and classify tech savviness. #ux #uxr #userexperience #userresearch #uxresearch

We'd appreciate it if you could take a moment to participate in our anonymous survey for UX professionals: https://lnkd.in/gjKZMpDs The data you provide helps us maintain the MeasuringU Salary Calculator, a resource we've developed over the last decade to offer salary estimates by weighing various factors and their effects on compensation. In addition to the calculator we’ll also summarize other industry trends including changes in method usage, and how organizations and people have been affected and adapted to the last two tumultuous years in tech. #ux #uxresearch #userexperience
Have you taken our #salarysurvey yet? Thanks to MeasuringU for partnering with us! By participating (it's anonymous), YOU can help improve the #UX profession by providing valuable information about compensation, benefits for various UX roles, and current trends. The results will be on the #UXPA website. https://lnkd.in/eYKNDug4

Comparing Key Research Designs: Exploratory, Convergent, and Explanatory An exploratory sequential design starts with the qualitative research and then uses insights gained to frame the design and analysis of the subsequent quantitative component. If you collect qualitative data and quantitative data simultaneously and independently, you’re executing a convergent parallel design. In the analysis phase, you often give equal weight to the quant and qual data—you look to compare and contrast the results to look for patterns or contradictions. An explanatory sequential design emphasizes quantitative analysis, which is followed up with interviews or observation (qualitative measures) to better understand the quant findings. #ux #uxr #userexperience #uxresearch #userresearch
