MassVentures is excited to announce $3 million in START grant funding for 17 deep tech startups. Funded by the Commonwealth and managed by MassVentures, the SBIR Targeted Technologies (START) grant program helps startups convert research developed under SBIR and STTR contracts into viable businesses in Massachusetts. The START program awards companies $100,000 to $500,000 in non-dilutive funds to help them commercialize their technologies. But START is more than just capital. The MassVentures team spends hundreds of hours each year providing business guidance, such as introductions to customers, partners, employees, and capital providers, along with go-to-market strategy, pitch coaching, and mentoring. START is also unique in that it covers activities that are critical for growth but not included in federal grant programs. In addition to supporting innovative companies, START has a tremendous impact on the economic growth initiatives of the Commonwealth. The program helps transfer research into viable businesses, create new industries, generate jobs, and bring new products to market. Since 2012, the MassVentures START program has granted $37.2 million to 125 companies which have gone on to raise more than $5.1 billion and employ more than 3,200 people in the Commonwealth. These companies have also added value by bringing over $2.2 billion in federal grant funding to the state. We are excited to be part of this visionary program and the innovative ecosystem it has helped create here in Massachusetts. Emvolon, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology climate-tech spin-off, is pioneering a platform technology that efficiently transforms greenhouse gases and waste into valuable chemicals and fuels, like green methanol and green ammonia. The patented technology behind this innovation is game changing: Emvolon repurposes mass-produced automotive engines to replace expensive custom-made chemical process equipment.    Heavy industries like shipping and aviation require high-energy-density, easily transportable liquid fuels for their operations. However, making these fuels in a sustainable, green way, as required by aggressive decarbonization mandates, is quite challenging and expensive. At the same time, a significant amount of methane gas from landfills, agriculture, and heavy industries escapes into the atmosphere, generating 12% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the US. Methane gas is a valuable resource that is wasted generating emissions because there is no cost-effective way to transport it to market and utilize it without expensive pipeline infrastructure.   Emvolon’s proprietary technology captures and converts methane gases onsite into ready-to-use, easy-to-transport liquid green chemicals and fuels, like green methanol and ammonia. By doing so, Emvolon’s technology simultaneously solves two important problems: it eliminates methane emissions from agriculture, waste management and heavy industries, while also offering a cost-effective green fuel for hard-to-decarbonize maritime and aviation. Emvolon's modular system converts biogas from landfills and agricultural waste into liquid green methanol that can be put in a standard truck container and taken to market for a low transportation cost, providing a way to monetize otherwise wasted and stranded resources to produce cost competitive green fuels.   MassVentures is thrilled to welcome Emvolon to our family and to work closely with CEO Emmanuel Kasseris, PhD and CSO Leslie Bromberg to commercialize this new and exciting technology!
