Meta is seemingly failing to enforce its own hate speech policy, which prohibits slurs targeting LGBTQ people, according to a new Media Matters for America and GLAAD analysis. We found over 100 hateful posts with the “tr*nny” slur, and Meta did not remove most of them. Meta states in its policies that hate speech “creates an environment of intimidation and exclusion, and in some cases may promote offline violence.” As harassment and attacks against LGBTQ people escalate nationwide, our research indicates that Meta’s refusal to protect marginalized groups from extreme hate may have real-world consequences.

According to Alex Schmider, GLAAD’s Senior Director of Entertainment & Transgender Inclusion, "This move by Rotten Tomatoes will enable LGBTQ audiences to more directly support the careers of LGBTQ filmmakers, talent, and inclusive films by having their ticket dollars and votes weighed more significantly in what titles receive greater industry recognition."

Since January 1, 2024, the ACLU has tracked more than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills that have been proposed in the US, accompanied by a historic rise in hate crimes against LGBTQ people.
