The month of August has been filled with memorable moments that remind me that intentional choices make impactful experiences for the community. This year’s Lean into Success program featured a number of new additions and returning gems such as: -A new wellness workshop led by culture coach and my fellow SPFHS alum, Nathalia Montoya Casanova. Students learned about the impact of stress, mental health first aid, and numerous breath work strategies. -A new student-led workshop about the Albany Law journals to introduce this leadership role to them before 1L year even begins. -Another great paint and sip partnership with the Capital Region’s favorite artist, Rae Frasier, and an unforgettable graze table with legal themed mocktails like the Prosecutor’s Punch by Crystal Jackson of Jackson Soul Catering LLC. -Another successful community engagement day with our partners at In Our Own Voices, Inc. and New Hope Church to prepare backpacks and school supplies for the upcoming community giveaway. -A new session on “How to Network” from the Career & Professional Development Center, immediately followed by a guided networking session where students met dedicated alums and passionate legal professionals in small groups. Here, they were able to listen and learn together, while also practicing their new skills. -A BIG surprise for me this year was the support and celebration from the DEI Team as we closed out the week with cake and joy. Thank you Jermaine Cruz for closing out my last Lean into Success program with celebration and support. I am so proud of the growth and progression we’ve created together over these last three summers of this program. This year’s Orientation BBQ also had some new additions to welcome students to the law school, but also to the Capital Region. Special thanks to Owen Collier for continuing to partner on new initiatives that bring the greater community to campus. A number of local supports came to campus to greet students and share resources including: -The Veteran’s Services Bureau -IOOV -NYS Parks & Recreation -NYS Office of Mental Health -The Damien Center -SHE is Beauty Hair Salon -Trends Barber Lounge -and more! As I begin this new semester in a new role, I will continue uplift and empower student voices, while infusing new experiences that add to their law school journey. In the words of Quain Bevans Jr., recent TEDx speaker and fellow William Paterson University alum, “Be intentional.” ♥️
