#MSHinTanzania: Improving Access to Safe Medicines Informal retail medicine shops in #Tanzania are often the first point of care for millions—yet the medicines sold in these unregulated outlets can often be of questionable quality or even counterfeit. Recognizing the vital role these shops play in providing access to #essentialmedicines for underserved and remote populations, MSH developed the Accredited Drug Dispensing Outlet (ADDO) model—an initiative that accredits and regulates these shops and their staff to provide safe, effective, and affordable medications: ➡Accreditation and Training: Shop owners – many of whom are women – receive training on proper pharmaceutical practices and standards for quality and safety. ➡Regulation: The model establishes regulatory frameworks that enable the government to monitor and maintain the quality of medicines sold in these outlets, reducing the prevalence of counterfeit or substandard drugs. ➡Community Engagement: Local communities and stakeholders are involved in the accreditation process, ensuring that the shops are responsive to the healthcare needs of the populations they serve. ➡Sustainability: Shop owners receive the tools and training they need to operate effectively and profitably. ➡Health System Integration: Accredited shops receive training in how to refer severe cases to health clinics, integrating them into the broader formal healthcare system. The success of the ADDO model in Tanzania led to its expansion into #Bangladesh, #Liberia, #Nigeria, #Uganda, and #Zambia, where it is transforming informal medicine shops into reliable and sustainable sources of healthcare in diverse and challenging environments.
