In June, Emily Blomberg became the new president of Regions Hospital, succeeding Megan Remark, now HealthPartners' executive vice president and chief operating officer. Emily has always been dedicated to helping others, a quality she brings to work every day. "I chose health care because I was influenced by my parents and grandparents who encouraged my brother and me to volunteer, be involved in the community and to help people," Emily says. "I can’t imagine working in any other industry." Emily describes herself as a transparent, easygoing collaborator with strong integrity. "I’m excited about the mission and culture of HealthPartners and Regions, and the hospital’s connection with St. Paul," Emily says. "Before starting, I’d heard that Regions was a special place, and that was obvious from the minute I arrived. The people who work here are so passionate about caring for our patients and community and about doing the right thing to improve the quality of care we provide." We’re thrilled to have Emily on our team!

Recently, dozens of doctors and medical students got a chance to see real-life scenarios that paramedics, EMTs, firefighters and police encounter before patients get to the hospital. The event was part of our second annual Resident EMS Day, and its goal was to train the residents who work in our emergency department in situations they rarely see or haven’t experienced. Maplewood EMS hosted the event that included training exercises in a second-story pediatric fire victim rescue; a car extrication with field amputation; an active shooter-mass casualty event; a cardiac arrest patient in an enclosed space; and a situation that required a hazmat response. Thank you to Regions EMS and all the first responders who gave residents and medical students a firsthand look at scenarios they see in the field.

Our own Dr. Brian Myer, an acute care surgeon at Regions, has received the University of Minnesota Wangensteen Award for Excellence in Teaching. The Department of Surgery residents vote for their “Faculty Teacher of the Year” from among surgeons they’ve worked with during their rotations at hospitals across the Twin Cities. “It’s such an honor to be recognized by them,” Dr. Myer says. “I was trained by some of the best educators and advocates, and I try to impart what they did for me to our residents.” Throughout their five-year residency, many of the residents were impressed with Dr. Myer’s dedication to their education and his ability to provide evidence-based patient management and surgical fundamentals. Theangensteen Award was established in memory of Dr. Owen H. Wangensteen who chaired the Department of Surgery from 1930 to 1967. “Wangensteen is a legend in American surgery, so it’s a privilege to have an award that carries his name.” Congratulations to Dr. Myer!

At Regions, we’ve been committed to improving child passenger safety for years. Shonette Micco, our injury prevention program supervisor, partners with community agencies, including the Saint Paul Police Department, to educate drivers and families about properly installing car seats. She and Commander Jeremy Ellison provide education and car seats to drivers and families with kids who aren’t safely seated in vehicles.
