On Friday, Yash Raj Films (YRF) changed the title of its Akshay Kumar-starrer period drama 'Prithviraj' to 'Samrat Prithviraj'. The makers came to the decision after multiple rounds of discussions with the Shree Rajput Karni Sena.
The Karni Sena had objected the original title calling it disrespectful in a letter to YRF. It wanted the title to reflect the legendary warrior king's status as 'Samrat' (emperor).
Before this, the protests by Karni Sena had led to the title change of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2018 period film 'Padmavat' too.
The banner went on to thank the Karni Sena and its members for understanding its "good intentions" in the depiction of the great warrior in the film, directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and featuring Kumar as the Rajput king.
YRF added that the team never intended to hurt anyone's sentiments and wished to "celebrate the bravery of Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan".
In response to Karni Sena's national president Mahipalsingh Makrana, the production house said, "As per the multiple rounds of discussions between us, and to peacefully and amicably resolve the raised grievance, we will change the title of the Film to 'Samrat Prithviraj'. We are highly appreciative of the mutual agreement reached between us that you have no further objections with regards to our film and that all other points raised by you earlier are no longer a point of contention between us. We sincerely appreciate your effort in alerting us about your grievance in relation to the current title of the Film, and assure you that we did not, and do not, intend to hurt the sentiments of any person(s) or disrespect the late king and warrior, Prithviraj Chauhan. In fact, we wish to celebrate his bravery, achievements, and contribution to our nation's history, through this Film."
This is Kumar's second film that has had a name change after being surrounded by controversy. Before this, his pandemic film 'Laxmii' had a title change too. The original name 'Laxmmi Bomb' faced opposition from religious/political groups.
Meanwhile, Kumar was seen busy promoting his film on social media with a four-minute-long video with comedian-actor Kapil Sharma.
In the video, 'The Kapil Sharma Show' host was seen visiting Kumar at 4 AM for a workout session. The actor was seen helping Sharma warm up, bench-press and showing what went into learning sword-fighting.
Kumar is known in the industry for his punctuality and for waking up at 4 AM to begin his daily routine.
The cast of the movie will be seen on the sets of Sharma's reality TV show.
'Samrat Prithviraj' stars Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood, and marks the screen debut of Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar, who plays the role of Sanyogita. The film is scheduled to be released theatrically on June 3 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages.
