After appearing in comparatively smaller roles in several movies, Akshay Kumar began his Hindi film career as a lead actor with the 1991 movie Saugandh
Kumar’s fame as an actor grew significantly after he starred in the 1992 thriller Khiladi
His martial arts background and athletic nature helped him earn several roles as a policeman. Kumar played the role of a cop in the 1994 movie Main Khiladi Tu Anari -- in which he starred alongside Saif Ali Khan -- and then again in Mohra in the same year
Adding to his versatility, Kumar played romantic characters in the 1994 movie Yeh Dillagi, and, Dhadkan which released in 2000
He set foot in the comedy genre with his role in the laugh riot Hera Pheri which released in 2000
He next played the antagonist in the 2001 movie Ajnabee which bagged him his first Filmfare Award
