    12 killed, 14 injured as tempo traveller carrying tourists falls into Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand

    Ten tourists were killed and 13 injured in a tragic accident on the Badrinath national highway in Uttarakhand. The victims were on their way to visit Chopta when the tempo traveller they were in skidded off the road and fell into the Alaknanda river. Most of the passengers were from Delhi. Seven seriously injured individuals were airlifted to AIIMS, Rishikesh, while six others are receiving treatment at Rudraprayag district hospital.

    The raging waters also swept away the Rishiganga and Tapovan hydel projects. The researchers’ hypothesis is based on surveillance by teams in helicopters as well as satellite images; the high altitude and the snow-covered region make the area inaccessible. “Our scientists observed evidence of the rock fall — a clear scar is observed at that height. The broken part of the glacier was also seen at the bottom,” says Kalachand Sain, director, Wadia Institute.

    Around 35 people are believed to be trapped inside the tunnel after a flash flood caused by fall of a cracked glacier in the Alaknanda battered villages and two hydel projects in Chamoli district. Workers at the Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel power project were trapped after the swollen Alaknanda hurtled down with rock and sediments.

    According to the 87-year-old environmentalist, who was a Chipko movement leader, projects like the Rishi Ganga hydel project, which bore the brunt of Sunday's calamity, should not have been given environmental clearance.

    “This approved plan is aimed at treating sewage water generated by not only city’s 1.5 lakh local dwellers, but also by people who visit the holy place. All these projects will be fully funded by the central government,” said the Union water resources ministry in a statement.
