Over 1.50 lakh devotees have already visited the 3,800-metre-high cave shrine to see the naturally formed ice lingam. The yatra began on June 29 via the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route, and will continue until August 19. Last year, more than 4.5 lakh pilgrims offered prayers at the shrine.

This year's yatra, which began on July 1, has seen more than 3.8 lakh pilgrims visit the Himalayan cave shrine. Thirty-six pilgrims have died during the yatra so far. The pilgrimage can be accessed through an uphill trek of 43 km from the south Kashmir Pahalgam base camp or a 14 km uphill trek from the north Kashmir Baltal base camp.

The shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that symbolises Lord Shiva, and pilgrims travel uphill to reach it, either from the Pahalgam or the Baltal base camps. The Amarnath Yatra ends on August 31.

      The pilgrims will undertake a 12-km journey from the base camp to the holy cave shrine located at an altitude of about 13,000 feet. All arrangements for the annual pilgrimage, including those related to security, have been put in place. Deputy Commissioner Shyambir said about 6,000 yatris arrived at the base camp. "I wish the yatra goes on smoothly. I request the yatris to carry their RFID cards," he told reporters here.
