    Congress headed for decisive win in Karnataka, BJP stares at loss in its only southern state

    The Congress was poised to win power in Karnataka, ousting the BJP from its only southern perch on Saturday in a boost to the grand old party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. As results from the May 10 elections made the BJP's defeat increasingly apparent, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai virtually conceded defeat and said the party had not been able to make the mark "in spite of a lot of effort put in by everyone, including the prime minister and workers of the party".

The counting will begin at 8 am in 36 centres across the state, and poll officials expect a clear picture about the outcome to emerge by mid-day.​​ The state registered a "record" turnout of 73.19% in the voting on May 10, to elect representatives to the 224 member assembly.

    Most exit polls predict that while the Congress would win the Karnataka assembly polls, they may not gain a clear majority. The BJP, although expected to secure fewer seats, is still projected to win approximately 80 to 100 seats, leading to a hung assembly. The P-Marq-Republic exit poll predicted the closest results with the BJP estimated to secure 85 to 100 seats, Congress 94 to 108 seats, and 24-32 seats for JDS. Coastal Karnataka has again been predicted to be a sweep for the BJP. The results will be declared on May 13.

    Voter turnout picks up momentum in Karnataka Assembly polls, crosses 50 per cent mark

    A voter turnout of 8.26 per cent was recorded in the first two hours of polling in Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections on Wednesday, according to Election Commission data. The highest percentage was in the coastal district of Udupi (13.28 per cent) and the lowest in Chamarajanagar district (5.75 per cent) till 9 am.
