    • ETMarkets Fund Manager Talk: This Rs 3 lakh crore asset manager sees market returns tracking earnings growth in 2024

Mahesh Patil says: "As the market starts to factor in rate cuts, and dollar weakens, one should expect FII allocations to India also improve as India offers the best growth amongst all major economies. With Nifty valuation only marginally above the long-term average, we expect market returns to be tracking overall earnings growth."

We are tilting towards largecaps in our portfolios but not too worried about mid and smallcaps: Mahesh Patil

“Given the current sentiment, as we move into the next calendar year, we could see fresh allocations from FIIs and they could take a slightly positive view over there. The allocations could increase in the first half of next calendar year and with the strong domestic flows which are coming, we could probably see the markets getting into elections slightly on a positive note.”

Long-term money will continue to buy the dips in India: Mahesh Patil

“India offers the best kind of market where one could see that runway of growth lasting for many years. That is what will draw global investment. This month till date, the FII outflows have been negative. That trend can continue for some time but long-term money would look to buy into the dips.”

Earnings growth should be around 16% in FY24: Mahesh Patil

I think markets are fairly priced over here. So it is not like it is very attractive but at the same time the risk reward is still fairly reasonable for a long-term investor to come in at these levels. We think that the risk reward across asset classes between say equity and debt is fairly well balanced at this point in time.

4 sectors Mahesh Patil is bullish on for near term

Despite concerns over growth slowing down and earnings downgrades, the Indian market is creating a good support for a medium to long-term move, says Mahesh Patil, CIO of ABSL AMC. He notes that valuations are now more reasonable and there are signs of decent earnings growth even if it is lower than previous expectations.

Valuations to remain high within the FMCG sector: Mahesh Patil

Within that the government spending on infrastructure in this budget we have seen a significant increase on that especially into a rail in the railway sector where we would see significant investment in terms of the rolling stock.

We expect hybrid funds to probably attract more flows this year: Mahesh Patil

It has impacted the sentiment because that could further impact growth and that is what the market is slightly worried about. But having said that I think overall at least from Indian market perspective we are not seeing any major impact on earnings growth.

After initial correction, market to scale new highs next year: Mahesh Patil

“As we move into next year, we still expect double digit earnings growth. There will be periods of volatility and some corrections next year. In the initial period, there would be some amount of correction but as the picture gets clearer, the market clearly looks to scale higher going forward.”

ETMarkets Smart Talk: Fund manager with over Rs 3,700 bn under AUM sees Nifty earnings growing at 13-15% CAGR over next 3 years

Nifty50 now trades at 1-year forward PE of 19x, above the long-term average of 18x. For the short term, there could be intermittent corrections considering the global scenario. Therefore, our range-bound view for the Nifty remains. However, on a medium-to-long-term basis, we continue to remain constructive on Indian equities," says Mahesh Patil, CIO, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC

Mahesh Patil on 2 themes to invest in for the next 2 years

“I still see double digit earnings growth for companies over the next couple of years. If that is the case, then I do not see any reason why the markets should not give double digit returns in the next calendar year, assuming that this year is a bad year or probably we are a tad negative from what we started. ”

We are not out of the woods yet but India looks a little better: Mahesh Patil

“The markets have been in the fair zone. There is some risk in the markets because of an earnings downgrade and to that extent, there could be some downside in the markets going forward. At least for the next one quarter or so, I think it would be quite volatile.”

Allocate 50-60% in largecap, multicap or a flexicap fund, 15-20% in mid, smallcaps: Mahesh Patil

“The larger cap space, which has seen immediate corrections after the entire selling, will provide more stability to the portfolio. So go for a 50-60% allocation to a largecap, multicap or a flexicap fund. Midcaps and smallcaps could see further volatility. Go into mid and smallcaps with a three-year view. I would recommend 15-20% allocation in the mid and smallcap space.”
