    Prem Singh Tamang elected leader of SKM legislature party

    As per the Election Commission of India, the ruling SKM is currently in the lead in 30 out of the 32 assembly seats in Sikkim, with the SDF ahead in one constituency. Vote counting for all 32 seats in Sikkim commenced at 6 am on Sunday, under stringent security measures, as reported by officials. Prem Singh Tamang, the Chief Minister and candidate of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), held a lead of approximately 6,443 votes over his closest SDF competitor, Som Nath Poudyal, in the Rhenock assembly constituency. Similarly, in the Soreng Chakung Assembly constituency, Tamang maintained a lead of 2,052 votes over his nearest SDF rival, A D Subba.

    Sikkim Chief Minister and SKM supremo Prem Singh Tamang is contesting from Soreng-Chakung and Rhenock assembly seats in the upcoming elections instead of Poklok-Kamrang. He is banking on his government's welfare measures to win, facing a multi-cornered contest. The elections for the Sikkim Assembly and Lok Sabha seat will take place on April 19.

    Former footballer and politician Bhaichung Bhutia has expressed openness to joining the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) led by former chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling. Talks are currently underway, and Bhutia stated that details will be provided once they are finalised. The fate of Bhutia's own party, the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP), is also being discussed within the party. Bhutia has been holding meetings with Chamling to develop a common strategy against the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) led by Chief Minister P S Golay.

    He said there is a strong possibility of an electoral alliance between the two parties which had also joined hands on another key demand - introducing an Inner Line Permit (ILP) which would restrict visitors and settlers in the pristine state wedged between West Bengal, Nepal and China.
