    Why India hardly does documentaries

    India, the world's largest feature film industry, has a strong independent, especially documentary filmmaking scene. While some films, like Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine as Light and Nishtha Jain's Farming the Revolution, have won awards, the country has stopped supporting such cinema.

Despite facing chants of "anti-national" and "Go Back To Pakistan," she courageously stood with 34 peers to oppose the appointment. The protestors argued that the 'Mahabharata' actor lacked the necessary credentials for the position.

    ​During her time at FTII, Kapadia had led a student protest against the appointment of actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan, best known for his portrayal of Yudhisthir in the mega TV serial "Mahabharat", as its president.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Payal Kapadia, an FTII alumnus, for winning the Grand Prix award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival for her film "All We Imagine as Light". The film, which marks Kapadia's feature directorial debut, is the first Indian film in 30 years and the first by an Indian female director to be showcased in the main competition segment.
