Better ForeCaste: Gap in consumption shrinks; spending by SC, ST, OBCs rose 1% faster each yr
Consumption spending in marginalized groups like Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes has seen a faster annual growth rate of 9.2% between 2011-12 and 2022-23, indicating a decline in consumption inequity between upper and lower castes in India. The monthly per capita consumption of these groups nearly tripled in rural areas.

10 per cent reservation approved for newly added tribes, OBC reservation enhanced to 8 percent in J-K
Jammu and Kashmir administration approves 10% reservation for four new tribes, increasing total ST reservation to 20%. Additionally, 15 new castes added to OBCs with reservation increased to 8%. The move follows Parliament's passage of bills granting OBC reservation in local bodies and adding Gadda Brahmin, Koli, Paddari Tribe, and Pahari Ethnic group to the ST list. The amendments aim to provide equitable representation in government jobs and education for historically marginalized communities.

The top court is hearing references to revisit a five-judge constitution bench judgement of 2004 in the case of 'EV Chinnaiah vs. State of Andhra Pradesh' in which it was held that SCs and STs are homogenous groups and hence, states cannot further sub-classify inside SCs and STs to grant quota inside quota for more deprived and weaker castes in these groups.
Govt issues notification to recognise as Kunbis kin of Marathas whose Kunbi caste records found

Bihar: 95.49 per cent people don't own any vehicle, says caste survey report
"Only 49.68 lakh people, or around 3.8 per cent of the population, own two-wheelers, while just 5.72 lakh people, or 0.11 per cent, have four-wheelers. Only 1.67 lakh people, or 0.13 per cent, own tractors," it stated. A total of 11.99 lakh of the 2.01 crore people belonging to general category own two-wheelers.
BJP releases fourth list of candidates for Chhattisgarh elections

Concept of SC/ST,OBC reservation would not apply to minority institutions, says Madras HC
The Madras High Court has ruled that communal reservation, which applies to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other Backward Classes, does not apply to minority institutions. The court allowed an appeal from a college seeking religious minority status and directed the issuance of a Permanent Religious Minority certificate. The court stated that Article 15(5) of the Constitution does not compel minority institutions to admit students from these categories.
Over 42 pc teaching posts for OBC, SC, ST candidates in central universities vacant: Govt
Over 42% of teaching positions reserved for OBC, SC, and ST candidates in 45 central universities in India are vacant, according to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Out of 7,033 positions sanctioned for OBC groups, 3,007 remain open which makes it 46% of posts for OBC candidates unfilled.
National Overseas Scholarship: Eligibility, process and other details
The National Overseas Scholarship is a government scholarship offered to low-income students from various categories for pursuing their Masters and Ph.D. programs abroad in diverse fields. Thirty percent of the scholarships are reserved for female students. According to sources, the NCST has conveyed to the government that the problems of SCs and STs are "distinctly different in nature and require separate strategies for identification of gaps and prevailing disparities as well as providing administrative arrangements and solutions thereof are also likely to be different for both categories". It recommended that separate guidelines and strategies be adopted for STs.

'Cruelty by husband, kin' top crime against women: NCRB
Total 31,677 rape cases were registered in 2021 as compared to 28,046 cases in 2020. Rajasthan (6337) followed by Madhya Pradesh (2947) reported most FIRs under section 376 of IPC while Delhi (1250) recorded most number of cases among the UTs, as per NCRB. Cases of crime against women rose to 4,28,278 in 2021 showing an increase of 15.3% from 3,71,503 cases in 2020.
One VC each from SC-ST community in central universities: Education ministry
The statistics from 45 central universities were shared by Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar in response to a written question in Lok Sabha. As per data till April 1, 1,306 out of 12,373 teachers in 45 central universities belong to SC community, 568 (ST), and 1,740 (OBC) while 8,386 are from general category.
