PATIALA: A clash among inmates in Punjab's Sangrur jail has left two of them dead and two others injured, prompting the authorities to arrest eight prisoners and Punjab Human Rights Commission directing the additional director-general of police (prisons) to submit a report on the incident before the next hearing on May 10.
Police said a group of inmates late Friday evening came out of their barrack, attacked on-duty cops, barged into another barrack and attacked their rival inmates with sharp-edged weapons. As an alarm was sounded, jail staff managed to overpower the accused. The victims are Dharminder Ghora and Mohammad Haris, both from Malerkotla.
The accused have been identified as Simranjit Singh of Rasulpur Kular, Amritsar; Amandeep Singh, Satgur Singh, Simranjit Singh and Gurdhian Singh, all four from Sangrur; Manjinder Singh Kala of Faridkot; Arshdeep Singh of Bhikhi, Mansa; and Dilprit Singh of Tarn Taran. Police and jail officials claimed that a few were accused of murder and attempt to murder cases but none of them was a classified gangster.
The two injured victims, Sehbaz Goma of Malerkotla and Gagandeep Singh of Hamidi, are receiving medical care at Rajindra Hospital here.
Sartaj Singh Chahal, SSP, Sangrur, said that the dispute was rooted in previous conflicts between the groups. He clarified that the assailants were not recognised as gangsters.
"The accused clashed with the second group over an old rivalry. None of the accused is a gangster under any defined category. A case has been registered and further investigation is on," he said.
