Presidency College receives more than one lakh applications, highest in Tamil Nadu

Presidency College in Chennai receives over 1.3 lakh applications for 2024-25, with BA economics, BA history, and BSc chemistry being the top choices. Other colleges like Madras Christian College and Ethiraj College for Women see high interest in BCom and computer-related courses.

CHENNAI: Presidency College has received more than 1.3lakh applications for 2024-25, the highest for any arts and science college in the state .
BA economics, BA history and BSc chemistry were the most preferred courses in the college which has a total intake of 1140 in UG courses. In other institutions, including Madras Christian College and Ethiraj College for Women more students have applied to BCom and computer related courses.

“We have roughly received about 120 applications for one seat in college.These number of applications include multiple applications by the same student,” said R Raman, principal of Presidency College.
Last year, the college received 1,20,304 applications. This year, of 1.34 lakh applications, 53,171 were girls and 43 transgenders.
“The number of applications from girls has increased by 10,000 this year. The popular course among girls is BSc chemistry and BA history. More than 80% of our applicants are from outside the city,” Raman said.
A student can apply for up to five courses in a govt college.
The college also bucked the trend of declining interest in the BSc maths course as it received 5,098 applications for 48 seats. “We have received 450 more applications compared to last year. It’s a good trend,” he added. It also received 1,010 applications for its BCom and BCA programmes for hearing impaired students.

The college is also planning to add an auditorium, a hostel for differently abled students and a canteen this academic year. The college had started admission counseling for special category students on Tuesday.
Govt Arts College for Men in Nandanam has received around 19,727 applications for 1,132 seats. BSc computer science has received 5,106 applications which is the highest this year.
“BA Tamil and BBA courses also received more applications. The college also received more than 2000 applications from girls this year,” said C Jothi Venkateswaran, principal of the college.
Queen Mary’s College has received the most applications for its BCom course this year. “This year there are applications for BSc chemistry course,” B Umamaheswari, principal of the college.
Many govt colleges in the city are planning to start their admissions counselling on May 30.
