MUMBAI: Police have arrested an employee of an educational institute on charges of raping a woman by promising her brother a better job.
The accused, Sanjay Shah, deputy registrar with the institute, has been booked for rape, aggravated form of rape committed by police officers or other public servants in charge of hospitals and women's institutions, outranging modesty of woman, and criminal intimidation, among other sections of the IPC.
Shah was produced before the court which remanded him in police custody till March 27. The complainant alleged Shah boasted of connections with government officials and assured a better job for her brother. On the pretext of helping her, Shah took her to Delhi and Hyderabad, where he forced himself on her. When she objected, Shah reportedly threatened her with severe repercussions. Shah's wife threatened to defame her if she lodged a complaint, police said.
A student collective on the campus has written to the institute's administration, claiming it is not an isolated incident and students have come across alleged involvement of multiple professors in cases of sexual harassment in the recent past.
The students have sought removal of Shah with immediate effect.
