MUMBAI: The cabinet sub-committee on the Maratha reservation has resolved on Friday that the state government should reimburse the educational fees of girl students from the OBC community whose family has an annual income of below Rs 8 lakh as well as those from the economically weaker section (EWS).
The proposal will have to be placed before the cabinet for approval, said higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil.
He also said that an allocation will be made in the state budget for reimbursement of fees which had been pending for the last three years.
Patil further said that 22 lakh documents had been traced of Marathas with Kunbi antecedents. This means that their families will be eligible for the Kunbi (OBC) caste certificate.
He also said that a survey to establish the social and educational backwardness of the Maratha community would soon begin.
The three-member committee of judges would seek the help of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Gokhale Institute and International Institute of Population Sciences for the survey.
