The prestigious Critics Choice Awards was almost a repeat of the Golden Globe awards held last week, with the same actors, directors, films and television series picking up top honours.
Christopher Nolan, fresh out of his Golden Globes win, clinched the Best Director accolade for his biographical drama, 'Oppenheimer'. The film accumulated a total of 8 wins from the 13 categories it was nominated in.
Robert Downey Jr won the Best Supporting actor award, but in a surprise, leading man Cillian Murphy did not score a win in the Best Actor category.
Meanwhile, Margot Robbie's fantasy comedy, 'Barbie,' stole the spotlight by securing wins in multiple categories at the awards show. The film triumphed in the Best Comedy and Best Original Screenplay categories, in addition to claiming victory in Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design, accumulating a total of 6 wins.
Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' made waves with a groundbreaking 18 nominations, surpassing the previous records held by 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' and 'The Shape of Water,' which garnered 14 nods in their respective years.
In some big surprises for the night, the Barbie song 'I'm Just Ken' beat Billie Eilish's Oscar favourite 'What Was I Made For' to clinch victory, earning a surprised reaction from Ryan Gosling, who crooned the track.
'Killers of the Flower Moon', made a strong showing with 12 nominations in acting and technical awards, but sadly went away empty handed. Lily Gladstone, among the favourites to win in the Best Actress category, lost the award to Emma Stone, also a strong contender for her role in 'Poor Things'.
Meanwhile, in the television category, 'The Bear', 'Beed' and 'Succession' reigned supreme, with the lead actors taking home awards in Best Actor, Best Actress categories. While 'The Bear' won Best Comedy, 'Beef' took home the award for Best Limited Series and 'Succession' took home the top honour as Best Drama series.
While the Critics Choice Awards share some common ground with other prestigious ceremonies such as the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and the Emmys, they are known for throwing in a few curveballs and could play a deciding factor in picking the films that will win big in the upcoming awards season that culminates with The Oscars.
