Ask Ramesh Venkat of Eruma Sani fame about his experience directing his debut film, the horror-comedy Odavum Mudiyathu Oliyavum Mudiyathu, and he immediately corrects us, “This is a comedy-horror, and not a horror-comedy. It’s a horror story, but the way we’ve treated it will evoke a lot of laughs and not scare you.”
The film features several YouTube artistes from various channels, including Vijay, Harija, Gopi, Sudhakar, Vignesh, Augustine and Sha Ra.Ask Ramesh if there were ego clashes, and he says with a laugh, “Not at all. We knew each other for a long time. We’ve done events together, and have played cricket matches as well. We’ve visited each other’s channels to work on contents. When I pitched the idea for this film, they didn’t even ask for a narration!”
He adds, “We shot the movie entirely in Chennai — on ECR and in Valasaravakkam. Major portions have been shot in two theatres in Otteri.”
Though Ramesh has been involved in short films for a while now, he says shooting a commercial film was a different thing altogether. “We knew the technical aspect of filming and have creative ideas, but the film atmosphere was very different. I have never heard of call sheets before. I initially didn’t know that if we shoot after 6pm, it’s called double call sheet. When we filmed shots, we could place the camera anywhere and just shoot. But now, I was asked to take permission formally. It was a little different for the first 10 days, but then, I learnt the ropes and thoroughly enjoyed shooting for the film,” he signs off.
