NAVFAC Marianas reposted this
Did you know about Guam… It is the largest and southern most island in the Mariana Islands archipelago. It has a rich history influenced by various cultures, including Chamorro, Spanish, American, and Japanese. Guam’s culture is a vibrant blend of indigenous Chamorro traditions and influences from Spanish, American, and Asian cultures. This diversity is reflected in its festivals, cuisine, and daily life. If you ever thought about relocating to Guam, NAVFAC has opportunities for you here: https://lnkd.in/e-bzWa5X And listen to some of our NAVFAC engineers based out of Guam on the NAVFAC podcast: https://lnkd.in/gC_ySB5K

Last month, we welcomed 76 fourth-grade students on Joint Region Marianas Public Access tours to cultural and historic sites on US Naval Base Guam. They had a great time visiting and learning about sites such as the Japanese POW Amphitheater, Gab Gab Beach, the National War Dog Cemetery, and the Sumay cemetary. The Public Access program provides cultural and historic tours for community members that do not have access to the military installations. Are you interested in a tour? We are proud to highlight Millie Camacho, who recently recognized with the Peggy D. Craig Lifetime Service Award, in this story: In the summer of 1971, Mildred Rivera Camacho was excelling at her college accounting and bookkeeping classes in San Diego when her older sister came to visit. She asked Millie to return home to Guam to help her mom with her new house, and Millie listened. When Millie arrived back on the small Pacific island, her mom said she hadn’t needed her back home after all. But Millie soon realized, “She already had things planned, my sister.” Millie attributes the start of her 52-year career thanks to her sister, who at the time had a job in a human resources department for the Navy. “Back then, to get into the civil service, you had to pass two tests,” said Millie, explaining how her sister had her tested to enter the civil service. Before long, Millie had been accepted into a position as a clerk typist for Officer In Charge of Construction Marianas. Her office space was in the same building as the accounting department, and once word of Millie’s finance background spread, she was asked to join their team.
