Department Responsibilities: The Human Resources Department oversees the employment process, including the recruitment, application, selection and orientation of new employees. The department assists in the training, evaluation and promotion of existing employees. It participates in negotiations and day to day administration of employee contracts; administers employee and retiree insurance and benefit plans, and ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws.

These descriptions are also available in the Human Resources Department and are posted on bulletin boards in City buildings. The descriptions include the title of the job opening, examples of duties and responsibilities, qualifications needed to apply, compensation and the deadline by which applications must be received.

Part-time and seasonal jobs include Summer Laborers for the Department of Public Service.

Applications are reviewed for minimum qualifications. Candidates are then scheduled for an examination and/or interview, and placed on an eligibility list, which is usually good for one year. The Department Head notifies applicants for a final interview as vacancies arise.
