The most-used car hire company in our survey, American car rental company Avis operates in thousands of locations in six out of the seven continents.
For a company trusted by so many, its poor customer service and middling value for money ratings are disappointing.
If you want to see how Avis measures up against its rivals, read our best and worst car hire companies page.
Hire Company | Which? Recommended Provider? | Customer Score |
---|---|---|
Avis | No | 67% |
Customer score is based on a combination of overall satisfaction and how likely people are to recommend the company
Avis was the most-used company in our survey, which makes its dreadful two-star customer service score very disappointing. One customer said the service was ‘appalling’ and another described it as ‘rushed’ and ‘rude’.
It also only managed an average three-star score for value for money. At an average price per day of £52, one customer told us they felt Avis offered a 'cheap service for an expensive price'.
Avis did manage to bag four-star ratings in some areas, including for age, condition and mileage of cars, clarity of the final hire cost and ease of opting out of extra charges. But an average three stars for how the description of the cars matched reality is concerning.
Nevertheless, several customers recommended the benefits of the free-to-join Avis Preferred loyalty programme, which allows you to bypass the rental car counter – worth keeping in mind if collection speed is a top priority.
Avis offers high-quality cars worldwide but its customer service rating is poor, and its value for money is underwhelming.
