Big manufacturers launch their new ranges annually, even before the previous year’s stock has sold out. This, along with heavy competition between brands and retailers, means there are usually good deals around. And if nothing catches your eye, there are always new laptop deals around the corner.

However, not every offer is as attractive as it might appear. Read on for our expert pick of genuine laptop deals on models that score well in our tests and are on sale at a good price. We've found some significant savings – in recent times we've even found £249 off the brand new Apple MacBook Pro with an M3 processor.

It weighs just 1.14kg, which is very light for a 13-inch 2-in-1.

Acer Chromebook Spin 513 CP513-1H

We like: Slim and lightweight

We don't like: No HDMI port

Weighing just 1.1kg, this Chromebook is light for a 2-in-1. So this could be a contender if you’re looking for a portable laptop.

Its Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is similar to the type of processor found in some smartphones. It also has 8GB of Ram, 64GB of SSD storage and a modest selection of ports, including a single USB-A, two USB-Cs and a 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack. It has no HDMI port, though.

We like: Speedy start-up

We don't like: On the heavy side

If you're after a budget-friendly backup laptop for your home, this HP Chromebook is worth a look.

It has an eight-core Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB Ram and 128GB of total storage. Ports include a 3.5mm headphone/mic jack, a Micro-SD card slot, one full-sized USB and two USB-Cs (one for charging), but no HDMI port.

At 1.72kg, it's not the lightest, but its specs are impressive for the price.

Asus Vivobook Go 15 E1504GA

We like: The battery life when streaming videos

We don't like: Sluggish boot-up

This 15-inch laptop from Asus has an eight-core Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB of Ram and 256GB of storage.

It weighs 1.53kg, which is about average for 15-inch models. But at 25mm thick, it's pretty chunky, and not the easiest to slide into a bag. So may not be ideal if you're going to be on the move.

But it does feel pretty well-built, which makes a change from the flimsy feel of many mid-priced models.

Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i 14-inch Chromebook Plus

We like: Strong spec sheet for the price

We don't like: Disappointing touchpad

Considering the price, this mid-sized Chromebook from Lenovo punches well above its weight in terms of specs (eight-core Intel Core i3 processor, 256GB storage and 8GB of Ram) and we like the fact it features a matte screen and HD display. 

Its specs are more than good enough for getting work done without having to worry about the laptop slowing down.

This 17-inch laptop weighs just 1.35kg, so it won't weigh you down if you're out and about.

Its top-tier specs include a 12-core Intel Core i7 processor (with four fast performance cores), 16GB of Ram and a massive 2TB solid-state drive. So it's kitted out for practically any task you can set it, including high-end video editing.

It's slightly let down by its mediocre speakers and webcam, but it's still bristling with quality.

If you’re looking for the lightest, largest laptop you can buy, then Acer's Swift Edge 16-inch could be the model to go for. It weighs just 1.19kg, which is extremely light for such a large laptop, and means you’ll easily be able to carry it around with you all day, as long as you have a bag big enough.

It's impressive in terms of specs, too, with a rapid eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 processor and 16GB of Ram.

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (2020)

• Apple M1 processor

We like: Thin and light

We don’t like: Not many ports

The MacBook Air is thinner, lighter and cheaper than the MacBook Pro, but it also has a smaller battery and no cooling fan to keep the processor performing at its best when working full pelt on intensive tasks.

The thing that really stands out is just how portable this 13-inch 2020 MacBook Air is - it weighs less than 1.3kg. Specifications-wise, there’s an Apple M1 processor on board, 8GB of Ram and 256GB of SSD storage, meaning it should be fast enough for most day-to-day tasks. 

While it's been superseded by newer MacBook Airs, at this new discounted price it's a cracking deal.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020)

We like: Thin and light

We don’t like: Only two USB ports 

This laptop weighs 1.35kg, and feels solidly built thanks to its aluminium shell. Ports-wise, there are two USB-C ports and a headphone jack. The USB-C ports also work with the Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4.0 standards, which allows you to connect to a host of high-end accessories such as high-speed external storage.

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (2022)

We like: Quiet, beautiful Liquid Retina display

We don’t like: Poorer battery life than previous models (based on our tests)

This 2022 Apple MacBook Air is the latest version of Apple's vastly popular lightweight laptop. It has the M2 chip, is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, and some elements have been redesigned. 

It also features Apple's Liquid Retina display, which is a big selling point if you're looking to edit photos and videos.

Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021)

• Apple M1 Pro processor
• 16GB Ram 
• 512GB storage

We like: Extremely fast

We don’t like: Heavy

The largest MacBook Pro on the market, the 2021 model has now been superseded by newer iterations. But that means prices on the older version have fallen.

Aimed at people who use their computers professionally for tasks that would challenge most other laptops, it still comes equipped with Apple’s high-spec M1 Pro or Max processor, 16GB of Ram and 512GB of storage, along with a 16-inch 'liquid retina XDR' display.

How to spot a good deal on a laptop

Michael Passingham, Which? laptop expert says:

It feels like most laptops are on discount most of the time, doesn't it? It can therefore be really hard to spot a genuinely great deal. Aside from using our hand-picked deals featured above, you can do your own research to find stonking deals. 

I'd recommend making a shortlist of laptops based on our Which? laptop reviews. Then occasionally check in on the prices every now and then (we list the best retailer deals we can find in every review) to get a feel of how the price cycle goes, and then see what happens over a given sales period. Once a laptop is advertised at a discount in a deal season such as Black Friday, it is unlikely to get any cheaper at a given retailer, so you should feel satisfied that you've got the best price you'll find for a few months. 

Deals that get me excited:

• £200 or more off Microsoft Surface and Samsung
• £200 or more off Apple (rare)
• £300+ off other high-end laptops
• £50 off low-end laptops under £300

Deals I'd skip:

• Less than £100 off HP laptops at Currys
• £50 or less off Apple laptops
• Money off laptops under £150 to begin with (these are unlikely to be great)

Acer laptop deals

You can often find deals on Acer’s UK website that aren’t available elsewhere. The site also lists a wider range of specifications on certain models than you will find on the high street, so it’s always worth checking here as well as the usual online stores.

Apple laptop deals

We’ve found Apple laptops are very often cheaper, and available for faster delivery, when you don't buy direct from Apple. The main reason you’d buy directly is if you wanted a specification, such as a processor, Ram and storage combination, that isn’t available anywhere else. But you’re less likely to bag a bargain this way.

Asus laptop deals

Asus laptops are stocked by a wide range of retailers in various configurations, so it’s always worth shopping around. The company also sells directly on its website. Its prices are mostly higher than other retailers, unless you’re a student, in which case you can get 15% off if you buy direct.

Dell laptop deals

For the widest range of Dell laptops, you should look at the Dell website. If you’re thinking of buying from a retailer, check whether there’s a cheaper or higher-spec model available direct before you buy. 

Dell often has some kind of online voucher code or discount active, so it pays to wait for one before buying.

HP laptop deals

HP laptops are stocked by nearly every laptop retailer, but most of the ‘deals’ you’ll find are at Currys, with dozens of models available. Most HP laptops go on sale at a higher price and are discounted by at least £100 after a month or so. 

HP also sells directly through its website, so it’s always worth checking there for discounts and voucher codes.

Like Asus, Lenovo models are found scattered around the high street and at online-only retailers, so it’s worth doing your research. We’ve often found you get the best price buying direct from the Lenovo website, so always check there before you buy.

When and where are the laptop sales?

You shouldn't need to pay full price for a laptop, but just because a deal exists doesn’t mean it’s worthwhile. Here's how to see through the tricks of the trade at key retailers.

Currys laptop deals and ‘clearance’ sales

At certain times of the year, Currys loads up its clearance pages with laptop deals. Despite what the term ‘clearance’ might suggest, discounts on these models can sometimes be very small. 

If you spot a discount, do check whether rival stores are selling it for less. We've seen laptops initially go on sale for a higher price, then drop to something more reasonable. 

Currys also operates a price-matching scheme, but this may not always be as good as it seems. Many of the laptops it sells are exclusive to the store; it might be an exclusive colour or a slight change in specification, but it’s enough that the model won't qualify for a price match.

Amazon laptop deals

Amazon often has the best price on a given laptop, but it's always worth checking if it's being sold directly by Amazon or a marketplace seller. If it's the latter, check the seller's reviews before buying and check , but it does have a wide variety of notebooks on sale at any given time. However, many of its bestsellers are quite old – some are even second-hand. It’s always worth checking Amazon though, just in case it has a laptop you’re interested in at a discount.

Also, be wary of small-brand laptops sold exclusively on Amazon. We’ve tested a few and none has impressed us – despite the overwhelming number of positive reviews from buyers.

Argos laptop deals

Argos often has good deals on individual laptops, so it’s always worth checking back there to see what’s new. Watch for ‘deals’ marked as ‘WOW’ though, as these can quite often not be deals at all and simply reflect Argos wanting you to pay attention to a product. Also look for pointers that say ‘great new price’ – we’ve seen in the past that the new price can be higher than the old one.

The best bet for Argos deals is to look for ‘clearance’ deals, as these are normally genuine discounts.
