When your eye is on the sky, what is a glass ceiling? Kalpana Morparia’s career trajectory has been an example for women — and men — to follow. Her words, therefore, at philanthropy foundation Dasra’s closed-door discussion on leadership and women in the workplace were both compelling and illuminating.

Morparia, who serves as the Senior Country Officer of JP Morgan for South and South East Asia, spoke lucidly about those heart-breaking moments when she was witness to women with tremendous promise slip away, caving in to the demands of home, marriage and child-rearing.

“The workplace is friendlier for women if we make it so,” she said, addressing a round-table of women professionals, each occupying significant positions in their respective organisations.

The seasoned banker also made an appeal on behalf of the menfolk. “Spare a thought for them,” she said, referring to the burden of expectations that they are saddled with.

In conclusion, Morparia spoke of the imperative of “letting each prosper without putting pressure on either species”.
