La Liga MD Jose Cachaza’s work-from-home routine is a bit like a mazy Lionel Messi run towards the goal. It combines bursts of energy, some turns and stops, exchanges with teammates and then a finishing touch.

“I start working at 9 am. The morning goes fast in answering mai ls and video cal ls,” the Delhi-based Cachaza says in an email from his home in Madrid, where he has been for the past few weeks. “Then in the afternoon, I usually work a couple of hours more. During the rest of the day, I leave some time for reading and usually watch a movie or a series before going to sleep. I change this a little on weekends. It’s important to remember that they exist too.”

But work can beckon any time, as Cachaza has dealings with people in various time zones. “I need to work in two different time zones [India and Spain]. Sometimes there are people from three continents on a call. So I need to be focussed all day,” he says.

Tea, quietude or music keep him going. “It depends on my mood,” Cachaza says. “At one time I can be working in silence, other times I switch on a news radio station. In music, I mostly listen to opera, general ly Verdi and Wagner.

Funnily enough, when I need to do something under real pressure, heavy metal helps me concentrate. Some energetic Bruce Springsteen can do the trick too.”

Cachaza works in his study. Sometimes his college-going son Sergio joins him. “My son prepares for his exams while I do my work,” he says.

The Spanish League was suspended on March 12. It may resume in June. As such, Cachaza’s work brief has evolved.

“The first weeks of lockdown we were simply trying to understand what was going on,” he says. “In parallel, we started to think how we could help those who were in a worse situation than us and reacted with several solidarity initiatives. And the past few weeks, we’ve been working hard towards the comeback of the league. But I must say, I miss Delhi’s masala chai.”.
