    • A writer by profession and a reluctant politician, Naveen Patnaik joined politics during his early 50s after his father and the former chief minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik, died in 1997
    • A year later, the Janata Dal split and he became one of the founding members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), a regional outfit named after his legendary father
    • Subsequently, he was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from the Aska constituency in Odisha
    • In 1998, he was appointed as the Union Minister for Steel & Mines in the NDA cabinet
    • When the BJP-BJD alliance won the Odisha Legislative Assembly elections in 2000, Patnaik was elected as the chief minister of Odisha for the first time
    • The alliance was victorious again in 2004 and Patnaik continued as the chief minister of the state
