    Kuwaiti authorities launch crackdown on illegal property extensions after Mangaf fire

    Most deaths were due to smoke inhalation while residents in the building were sleeping when the fire broke out early Wednesday in Kuwait's southern city of Mangaf in Ahmadi Governorate. The building was home to 196 migrant workers, mostly Indians. The Kuwait Municipality has launched a rigorous crackdown on illegal property extensions, the Arab Times newspaper reported.

    Kuwaiti authorities are conducting DNA tests on over 40 Indian victims of a deadly fire in the Mangaf area. An Indian Air Force aircraft is ready to repatriate the bodies. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is in Kuwait to assist the injured and expedite the return of remains. The fire claimed 49 lives, including 42 Indians. Singh met with Kuwait's foreign minister, who promised full support, including medical care and a thorough investigation.

    The Kuwait government has ordered a crackdown against the guilty, particularly the real estate owner. On Wednesday, Kuwaiti deputy premier, defence and interior minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah, rushed to the accident site and visited the hospitals where the injured workers were taken for treatment. He has ordered the arrest of the Kuwaiti landlord of the building where fire broke out.
