    Increase minimum selling price of sugar to Rs 42/kg, says industry body NFCSF

    The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF), representing co-operative sugar mills in India, has requested the central government to increase the minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar by 35% to Rs 42/kg. The MSP was introduced in 2018 and last revised in February 2019. However, sugar prices have been consistently higher than the MSP, with ex-mill prices in Maharashtra being Rs 36/kg, and retail prices in the range of Rs 42-44/kg. The NFCSF has already submitted its proposal to the Union Government.

    NFCSF welcomed govt's decision to allow 7 lakh tonne of B-heavy molasses for ethanol, aiding in ethanol production and improving sugar mills' finances. This move will release around Rs 700 crore from remaining stocks, impacting selling rate and distillation projects.

    However, Uttar Pradesh, the country's second largest sugar producing state, produced more sugar at 34.65 lakh tonnes till December of this season, when compared to 30.80 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period. NFCSF said the average sugar recovery in the country stood at 9.17 per cent and "as winter progresses, sugar yield is expected to increase accordingly".

    "Maharashtra had the highest share of 24.25 lakh tonnes, followed by Uttar Pradedh, which has produced 22.11 lakh tonnes. Karnataka is at the third place with production of 16.95 lakh tonnes of sugar," said ISMA in a media release.

    Indian sugar mills have produced 4.32 million metric tons of sugar, down 10.7% YoY, due to delayed operations in Maharashtra and Karnataka due to price disputes with farmers. This could lead to reduced export quotas and support for global prices trading near multi-year highs.
