Ponda: Water overflow from the duckbill spillway of the Selaulim dam stopped three days later this year compared to 2022, despite the reservoir level remaining low through the year.
The water flowing down the crest stopped at 4.50am on Wednesday. Last year, the flow stopped on November 19 morning.
Water resources department’s (WRD) executive engineer, Jason Menezes attributed the reason for the delayed overflow to post-monsoon showers.
“The dam had recorded a slow rise in the water level this year. It was expected that the overflow would stop by November 5. However, the post-monsoon showers prolonged it,” the executive engineer added.
The phenomenon of overflow that continues for four months of the season depends on the intensity of rainfall in the catchment area. Hundreds of visitors throng the dam to witness the water falling down the crest. The duckbill spillway is designed to pass a maximum flood discharge of 1,450 cu mt of water per second.
