MUMBAI: As schools prepare for their first semester exams before Diwali vacation next month, they are awaiting a government order on doing away with the ‘no-fail’ policy for classes 5 and 8 students from this academic year
In May, the state government amended the Maharashtra Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules to bring back an annual exam in class 5 and 8 and thereby detain those not achieving the requisite competencies.
The amendment allows a re-exam before deciding the fate of a student. So far, as per the Right to Education Act (RTE), students in the state are automatically promoted to the next class till standard 8.
Schools, along with sensitising parents about detaining children, have been preparing students to write their exams. In many schools, students who have reached class 5 had no practice of writing exams in their previous years.
“Parents of students of classes 5 and 8 have been told to take the first semester exams seriously as their children may have to appear for an annual exam that is likely to be conducted by the state,” said a principal.
