Mumbai’s first metro to complete 10 years on June 8
MUMBAI: Mumbai's first metro line, the 12-kilometer Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, is set to celebrate 10 years of commercial service since its launch on June 8, 2014.
A spokesperson for Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd. stated, “Mumbai Metro One has successfully completed 11 lakh trips with more than 99% punctuality since it began operations a decade ago.”
The Mumbai Metro One corridor features 12 stations, beginning at Versova in the western suburbs and concluding at Ghatkopar in the eastern suburbs.

Over the past 10 years, the 16 trains of Mumbai Metro One have collectively traveled nearly 12.6 crore kilometers, averaging around 7.9 lakh kilometers per train.
The metro line traverses the bustling areas of Andheri and Ghatkopar, connecting major junctions such as the Andheri railway station on Western Railway (WR) and the Ghatkopar railway station on Central Railway (CR).
Currently, Mumbai Metro One accommodates approximately 4.5 lakh commuters on weekdays by operating 418 trips daily, with service intervals of about 3.5 minutes during peak hours and 7 minutes during off-peak hours.

The elevated design of the metro line required innovative construction techniques to minimize disruption to the existing urban landscape. Despite these challenges, the project was completed successfully, showcasing modern engineering prowess and meticulous planning.
Mumbai Metro One has significantly impacted the daily lives of commuters by offering a reliable, air-conditioned, and efficient mode of transportation. It serves as a welcome alternative to the overcrowded local trains and slow-moving road traffic.
The metro’s punctuality and frequency have made it a preferred choice for many, reducing the average travel time between Versova and Ghatkopar to just about 21 minutes, compared to over an hour by road during peak hours.
