I’m not a strict mom, just a firm one: Churni Ganguly

Ujaan Ganguly shares a special bond with his mother Churni Ganguly, who, according to him, is more of a friend than his mom. Speaking to us ahead of Mother’s Day, the mother-son duo speak about their relationship, mutual understanding, and more. Excerpts:
I’m not a strict mom, just a firm one: Churni Ganguly
To raise a child in a good way, a mother needs to have patience: Churni
Speaking about her approach to parenting, Churni said, “How I conduct myself sets an example for my child. As a mother, I’ve always given Ujaan a choice and not dumped my decisions on him. Explain to a child the consequences of a situation and let him decide. In that way his/her freedom is not curbed, and he becomes responsible too.
It will also help him exercise his choice in future.”
When asked if she’s strict as a mother, the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani actress said she is firm mom. “I feel there’s no need to supervise a child 24x7. A child should also enjoy his/her own space. I’ve always told Ujaan that he shouldn’t only focus on studies and expand his horizon. It taught him how to balance everything else and studies. I also taught him to be responsible for the things in the house so that he understands that it’s every family member’s responsibility to make a home run smoothly.”

Ma is the most resilient person in the family: Ujaan
Ujaan told us that he really admires Churni as a person. “Ma has gone through a lot in life to emerge as the person she is now. That’s something I truly admire. The way she has supported her family, worked relentlessly, raised me to be a happy and responsible child is worthy of applause. She’s the most resilient person in our family and I respect her for that,” he said.
When asked if he’s a mamma’s boy, Ujaan smiled and said, “I think I’m both and I have no shame in admitting that. If I’m in a crisis, I try to solve it myself, as I’ve been raised that way. But I know at the same time, I have my parents’ support if I’m in need.”

Ujaan about sharing screen with Churni son in Lokkhi Chele
Ujaan recalled the first day of shooting and confessed that he was a bit nervous. “I clearly remember that my first day of the Lokkhi Chele shoot was with ma and Ambarish Bhattacharya – both brilliant actors. And I was facing the camera after a year. So, it was not a very pleasant day for me. But ma made things easy on the sets and helped me focus. She is a supportive and loving person by nature and that reflects on the sets and at home too,” he added.

My motherly instinct is my strongest trait: Churni
Asserting that her motherly instinct is her strongest trait, Churni said, “I have an inbuilt protective instinct in me – towards my cast members, unit members and, of course, my family. I am the eldest among my sisters, but I’m more of a mother to them than as a sibling.”
Ujaan’s Mother’s Day plans
Revealing that he celebrates Mother’s Day in his own way, Ujaan said he used to make cards for Churni on the special day. “Later, I used to give her flowers, and cook for her. I remember when I was in Class VII, I made her an omelette for breakfast (laughs). But now, just a simple hug makes Mother’s Day extra special for both of us. She understands my language of love and vice-versa. I think that understanding is what the celebration is all about.”
Churni on the importance of ‘me-time’ for mothers
For any human being, me time is important. It can be just doing nothing and enjoying nature with a cup of tea in hand! A mother has the right to explore her own interests and not just look after the family. She has the right to unwind and be her own self. I need to say this especially to the homemakers that you need not sacrifice your life for your family; you must keep time for yourself too. I feel homemakers are in a profession that’s commendable, but they also have the right to their me-time.
Still have a lot to learn from ma: Ujaan
When asked if he can understand what his mother wants, Ujaan said, “I guess so. We share a great bonding and are more of friends than a mother-son duo. We talk about everything under the sun. And ma too understands what I want before I tell her. Moreover, ma and I are quite similar personality wise. But I still have a lot to learn from her.”

On Mother’s Day, I might just surprise her with a story and script with a meaty role penned for her

Churni quotes
On Mother’s Day, I’d like to tell mothers to enjoy your motherhood and embrace the changes in your body and mind. Doing this effortlessly is one of the best feelings in a woman’s life
To raise a child in a good way, a mother needs to have patience. Beating up a child, scolding him/her every now and then won’t help the child in any way
