Kollywood’s ‘mom’ Saranya Ponvannan to play a gangster in her next outing

Known predominantly for her brilliant performances as a ‘mother’ in Kollywood, Saranya Ponvannan is all set to play a hardened gangster in her next! “I wanted to break the stereotype and that’s exactly why I approached Saranya ma’am for the role. She is a versatile actress and I felt she would be perfect for the script and to play the lead,” says director Vishnu Ramakrishnan.
The film is set in Chennai and revolves around a gangster who had stopped indulging in violence.“But when her family member gets in trouble, she resorts to her old ways. It’s a proper gangster film, but the story is laced with family sentiments and humour,” says Vishnu, who had earlier worked as a cinematographer in Prabhu Deva’s Oomai Vizhigal and is awaiting the release of his debut directorial venture with Chaya Singh.
The director says Saranya will be showcasing typical gangster mannerisms in the film, and she performed the stunt sequences with a lot of ease. “There’s a major shooting sequence in the film. When I first told her about this, she was hesitant and was scared about pulling it off. But on the day of the shoot, she held the gun as though she had prior experience shooting such scenes. These are not small pistols, but huge imported automatic guns! She nailed the scenes. She didn’t even train for them beforehand,” he says.The film has Raaj Varma as the villain and Amzath Khan in a crucial role.
