01/6The power of meditation

What is meditation? Is it a ritual that calms you down, or is it just sitting in silence? Is meditation the same for all? Or are there many different ways to meditate?
These are some questions that are asked by people time and again. Meditation has been practised for thousands of years for its benefits on the mind and body. In today's world, meditation is what gives people a break from the constant stress and the information overload. 02/6Why do people get distracted?

Why do people get distracted?

Getting distracted has now become a common occurrence. One could get distracted while typing something, while in a meeting, and even trying to not get distracted! And so, even during meditation, distractions can happen for a plethora of reasons.
People can get distracted because of the normal, mental chatter, because of their monkey mind, because they are stressed about something, or anything similar to it. So, if getting distracted is so easy, how can people meditate well?
And for this, people go towards ‘Vortex’ meditation or breathing. It is believed that Vortex breath can immediately put people into a meditative state, calming their mind and helping with stress and distraction.

03/6What is Vortex breathing?

What is Vortex breathing?

Vortex breathing is a special technique that is designed to quickly help people reach a calmer, less-distracted, meditative state. Vortex breath focuses on deep, rhythmic breaths which helps the body calm down easily and keep away any extra distractions.
One thing to note about Vortex breathing is that it is not very easy to do it as it requires people to inhale and exhale longer than the normal amount of time. It is kind of like a controlled breathing technique with a specific pattern.

04/6The 9-6-9 of Vortex breathing

The 9-6-9 of Vortex breathing

The 9-6-9 technique is the classic example of Vortex breathing. Whoever wants to sit in meditation and eliminate any kind of distractions from their head should deeply inhale for 9 seconds, breathing in slowly through your nose, then hold their breath for 6 seconds, letting the oxygen absorb into your bloodstream, and then exhale slowly through the mouth for 9 seconds.
Now, the average human can only exhale for about 6-7 seconds, but with Vortex breathing the deep 9 seconds of inhaling helps them focus on one thing removing any external distractions.

05/6How to do it right?

How to do it right?

When just starting into Vortex breathing, make sure that you sit in a place which is dark and away from any external noise. Then, sit down on the ground and close your eyes. Now, slowly start breathing normally, and notice for how long you can inhale and hold your breath. If it is less than 9 seconds, then the 9-6-9 is the perfect timing for now.
So, after taking a few deep breaths, inhale deeply through your nose for 9 seconds, hold your breath for 6 seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth for 9 seconds. Continue this for several minutes, aiming for at least 5 cycles in the first sitting.

06/6Breathing technique and calming down

Breathing technique and calming down

Vortex breathing, with its deep breaths and holds and exhales helps calm the mind and body. First of all, the really deep breath that the human body is not really familiar too shifts the focus from mental chatter to the inhaling, then while the body signals immediate release, people have to hold the breath for a while before exhaling, this centres the mind on the breathing, and then when exhaling through the mouth a deep relaxation covers the body and mind. When done over and over again this breathing technique helps become more centred which in turn helps with meditations.
