CIBSE has launched the Embodied carbon in building services: logistics centres (TM65.3) guidance, developed with support from Amazon and Introba. This industry-first guidance offers a robust methodology for assessing the embodied carbon of MHE and MEP equipment in logistics centres. Introba's Head of Sustainability for UK & Europe Andy Stanton said: “TM65.3 is our first step along the journey to quantifying the embodied carbon across various logistics building typologies, particularly material handling equipment. Recently, I had the opportunity to tour the Oakridge Centre Redevelopment in Vancouver—a landmark initiative poised to reshape the city's urban landscape. Our Introba team was integral to its success, offering specialized master planning, mechanical and fire protection engineering, energy modeling, and sustainability consulting services. Spanning 4.7 million square feet, the development features a 1.2 million square foot shopping mall and commercial area, a 430,000 square foot office building, thirteen residential towers (ranging from eight to forty-four stories and totaling 2.9 million square feet), a civic center, and three levels of underground parking. Our involvement focused on optimizing passive design strategies and leveraging synergies between different building types to maximize energy and resource efficiency while reducing operational and embodied carbon. We also conducted a feasibility study for a low-carbon energy supply, evaluating four system options in the context of the District Energy System (DES) for the Cambie Street corridor. With the preliminary analysis complete, we are now fine-tuning an energy system to fit the scale of the Oakridge project and align with future DES requirements. Our approach integrates mechanical and fire protection engineering, energy modeling, and sustainability consulting, working with a broader team to achieve diverse sustainability objectives, including energy and water efficiency, carbon reduction, rainwater management, and affordable housing. 🌱 Paving the Way for Sustainable Construction in Essex! 🌱 We’re proud to have been part of the collaborative team behind the Embodied Carbon Policy Study for Essex, working alongside Levitt Bernstein, Etude, Hawkins\Brown and Currie & Brown. This vital study is set to influence planning policy across the region, targeting the integration of embodied carbon considerations in the Local Plan. Our role at Introba UK & Ireland focused on providing expertise in Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems to ensure the study not only included the innovative use of low-carbon materials and construction techniques but also considered the efficient design and operation of building systems. 🔍 Key Insights from the Study: 🌲Detailed modeling of three low-rise house typologies to assess upfront and lifecycle embodied carbon. 🌲Analysis of various construction methods and material types, including capital costing to demonstrate the feasibility of low-carbon approaches. 🌲An explainer on embodied carbon and an investigation of data variability, providing clear guidance for policymakers and developers alike. This study is a crucial step for the Essex Authorities as they work towards a consistent planning policy position, incorporating the study's recommendations into an updated policy for Net Zero Carbon Homes and Buildings. 📢 Project Spotlight: Chalmers Lodge Our team worked on upgrading and renewing a building in #Vancouver, #BC, that was previously used as a community-care facility for BC Housing and converting it into a supportive housing facility. We provided mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and security engineering services that will benefit the community. The location of Chalmers Lodge in central Vancouver means that residents have good access to transit, healthcare, shopping, and other amenities. It will provide new replacement homes for people in single-room occupancy (SRO) buildings in Vancouver and those living outside in the Downtown Eastside. Residents will receive a wide range of supports, including daily meals, life and employment skills training, and connections to healthcare and other community services. 📣 Project Spotlight: MetroHealth Glick Center Transforming healthcare in Cleveland, Ohio, with a state-of-the-art facility blending advanced technology and modern design. This new hospital is part of a neighborhood transformation. It features three acres of green space, which is set to expand to 12 acres. We provided comprehensive medical equipment planning and technology systems design, including structured cabling, security, audiovisual systems, nurse call, RTLS, patient entertainment, and distributed antenna systems. The Glick Center features a new central utility plant and an extensive tunnel connector. Advanced technology ensures every patient room is intensive care-capable, with family accommodations and remote communication capabilities. Digitally coded ID badges protect patient privacy, and smart badges facilitate caregiver communication. In a journey full of twists, like the meandering Muregeya River, a new path emerged, presenting unexpected challenges and significant impact. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dF7SBb8U When landslides jeopardized our original project, our Bridges to Prosperity team from TYLin, Introba, and Dar quickly pivoted, applying the expertise gained from B2P’s innovative hybrid suspension bridge project last year. With renewed focus, we embarked on building a 377-foot bridge over the treacherous Muregeya River. This crucial bridge will serve over 2,500 residents, providing safe passage and connecting them to markets, communities, and schools. Through these efforts, we hope to transform lives, weaving hope and opportunity into the fabric of the Rubengera community.
