Congressman Vince Fong representing California’s 20th District, came aboard Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake as part of a familiarization tour of his district. The tour included revisiting the progress of the Officer In Charge of Construction China Lake’s earthquake recovery efforts. Congressman Fong was briefed by OICC China Lake Supervisory General Engineer for the South Airfield Project Cmdr. Nathan Hardy and Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division Requirements Chief Engineer Nathan Novark on the progress of the nearly $4 billion program to return the base to full mission capability. Fong toured the 190 acre six-project South Airfield and the nearly completed $220 million Michelson Laboratory Complex project encompassing three specialized facilities.

Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command, Officer In Charge of Construction (OICC) China Lake’s Executive Officer, Commander Craig Peck, and Operations Officer/Supervisory General Engineer, Lieutenant Commander Timothy Dahms, were invited by the China Lake Museum Foundation to participate in one of a series of events on November 8, marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of Naval Ordnance Test Station, now Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake. The nearly four dozen participants were provided with an hour long progress update of the $2.7 billion, 29 project program that makes up the earthquake recovery program, that started in late 2020. Our presenters highlighted the efforts of the prime contractors and the plethora of sub-contractors that have made significant progress to bring these uniquely capable facilities to NAWS China Lake and Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, overcoming obstacles like extreme weather conditions, COVID restrictions, supply chain delays and maintaining a highly skilled workforce.
