Centre to move fresh CAPF units to Manipur, G20 Summit

The Indian government plans to deploy around 20-22 fresh Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) companies in the regions of Manipur that have been affected by ethnic violence. These additional units will join the 125 CAPF companies already stationed in Manipur since the outbreak of violence in May. The units will be withdrawn from the security detail for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir, which is ending soon.

More than 7,000 pilgrims left Jammu on Saturday to join the annual Amarnath pilgrimage. The pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Amarnath, located in the south Kashmir Himalayas, began on July 1. The pilgrimage runs for a period of 62 days; pilgrims from across the country travel to the holy site to worship a naturally formed ice lingam.

More than 40 food items have been banned at the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and the pilgrims have been advised to achieve physical fitness by walking at least 5 kilometres a day, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board said in its health advisory issued on Thursday. The banned food items include drinks, fried and fast food items.

The administration is preparing to welcome about eight lakh pilgrims during the yatra this year. The officials said NDRF and SDRF personnel are presently undergoing the specialised mountain rescue training at the Jammu and Kashmir Police facility at Nud in Samba district and some of the NDRF personnel deployed in the Union Territory will be part of the MRTs.
