Amritsar’s morning walkers debate future post-election scenario
Amritsar: During the Lok Sabha election campaign, both the nominees of political parties and independent candidates made concerted efforts to appeal to voters and also made hoards of promises with them and gave assurances of their fulfillment.
While the outcome of the polling will determine the winners and losers on June 4, however a day before the D Day, the residents of holy city are discussing and deliberating regarding the promises and assurances made by the candidates.
During a gathering of morning walkers at the city’s famous Rambagh Gardens popularly known as ‘Company Bagh’ ,groups of people discussed about the winning candidate, expressing hopes to address the myriad issues plaguing their respective colonies and areas.
A morning walker, Gurvinder Singh said that Amritsar, being a border city sharing boundaries with Pakistan, is also a bustling hub of business that attracts people from all over the country and abroad. “Despite this, the city still lacks basic amenities. While past central governments have made significant promises and achieved some progress, the overall neglect has had detrimental effects” said he.
Ravi Parkash, another morning walker from Shivpuri Colony said that drug abuse is the biggest issue in the city. “It is destroying families, leading people to send their children abroad for safety. This needs immediate attention. Similarly, law and order in the city have deteriorated and need to be restored. While there has been some progress in education and healthcare, it is not sufficient and more work is required”.

A newly married morning walker Sarika said that there was a dire need to develop new employment opportunities. “Amritsar is a tourism hub and the backbone of our economy. More efforts are needed in this regard. Trade with Pakistan and Afghanistan should be restored through the Atari border, all these will provide immense employment for the locals said Sarika.
Similarly at Rose Garden, the group of morning walkers were discussing about the promises made by the leaders of four major political parties and wondered how they would the fulfil them.
