BENGALURU: A day after external affairs minister S Jaishankar disclosed that his ministry received a request only on May 21 to impound the passport of Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, state home minister G Parameshwara on Saturday alleged that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) hadn’t informed the ministry concerned promptly.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah wrote to PM Narendra Modi on May 1 and 23, urging him to take action to cancel the diplomatic passport of Prajwal, who is alleged to have fled to Europe after being accused of sexually exploiting several women.
“This shows that the PMO has not informed the foreign ministry office. We can also see how the Centre is functioning,” Parameshwara mentioned.
The home minister noted that once the diplomatic passport is cancelled, Prajwal will have to return to India as he will lose immunity to stay abroad.
Meanwhile, former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy criticized political leaders for mounting pressure on the Centre for revoking the travel document, claiming they lack knowledge of the law.
“All leaders are talking about diplomatic passport but they have no knowledge of the law as a diplomatic passport cannot be revoked immediately,” Kumaraswamy said.
However, Siddaramaiah said the ministry of external affairs has the authority to cancel diplomatic passport.
“It has been 15 days since we wrote to the ministry. The SIT (special investigation team) also wrote a letter. What more do they want?” the chief minister said.
