Anjan Dutt gearing up for his UK gig
Anjan Dutt who balances his theatre gigs and film direction with elan will soon take his stage production ‘Raghupati’ to the UK. On May 2, his latest play that has floored everyone will be staged at Ditton Park Academy in Slough, London and the next day, at Capstone Theatre in Liverpool. Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s iconic creation Bisarjan, the play has been directed by Anjan, who plays the titular role of Raghupati. While Suprobhat plays Joysingha, Loknath Das plays Gobindyo Manikya and Rukmini Sarkar, a promising actor and NSD graduate, portrays Aparna. The play was first staged in December in Kolkata.
“Many people in the UK see me as a musician. But I am essentially a theatre person. I am really happy to take my play to the UK this year,” the director said.
Talking about the play, Anjan ‘Raghupati’, “This play stands against violence and religious dogma. I am analysing it through my worldview. I have taken eight scenes from the main conflict moments in the final version of Tagore’s play and just changed the language. I have incorporated my bits, especially the monologues. I wanted to tell today’s story.”
Meanwhile, Anjan who last directed ‘Finally Bhalobasha’ in 2019 has one more film in the pipeline. Titled ‘Shaheber Cutlet’, the food film stars Arjun Chakrabarty, Ambarish Bhattacharya, Suprobhat Das and Anjan Dutt himself in pivotal roles.
