I felt comfortable wrapped in Armaan's arms : Deeksha Seth
Actress Deeksha Seth, who was in town recently, speaks to Hyderabad Times about her big Bollywood debut, her equation with Raj Kapoors grandson Armaan Jain, Telugu movies and more.
She is eight films old in the South, but has no qualms being called a newcomer in Bollywood. Making her Bollywood debut with Lekar Hum Deewana Dil, opposite Raj Kapoors grandson Armaan Jain, Deeksha Seth is in a happy space, even if it means unlearning all that she had learned as an entertainer.
Deeksha visited the Hyderabad Times office along with Armaan. Excerpts from an interview.
Coming back to Hyderabad in exciting!
This is my first Hindi movie, but I am coming back to Hyderabad after 11 months. I was in an exclusive contract and was working only on Lekar Hum Deewana Dil. I have been in touch with everyone here, but its not the same as being in the city. The people here are warm and kind. Hyderabad has this small town innocence encapsuled in a large city, which is a rare find. I kept telling Armaan that I want to promote our film in Hyderabad, and when the team told us that we would be heading here, I was excited and so was Armaan. I asked the team to give us some time in between all the promotional work because I want to take Armaan out and show him the city, show him what all I have done going to the Hussain Sagar Lake, Maharaja Chaat
Learning three pages of dialogues in 3 minutes
If you can learn dialogues in a language that you dont know, obviously learning them in a language that you know was easy for me. While working in Telugu films, I used to write my dialogues in Hindi and English and then learn it. I remember once they gave me a scene for Mirapakay at 5 pm and told me to prepare. I thought the scene will be shot in the next two or three days. But in two minutes, someone comes and tells me to come and shoot for the scene! I was like now? So, you see, I have really struggled a lot with my dialogues in Telugu films. In this film, when I found Hindi dialogues, I didnt have trouble at all!

I had to unlearn things I had learned as an entertainer
When you have already done a couple of movies, you get into a pattern of doing things. And you know that okay, this is how I will do this scene, this is how I have to approach it. Then suddenly, you have to do away with all that. I will give you an example. One day, we were doing this dance sequence, and we were told that its going to be a party song. When we started doing the steps, I told the choreographer, Sir, this is wrong, this is very slow. This is what we call a love song in the South! This is not a dance sequence! For it to be a party sequence, the steps have to be like really fast! But the choreographer said, This is a party song! This is how its done. So, there was stuff that I had to unlearn. Also, Lekar Hum Deewana Dil as a film is in a very real space. If I was doing a commercial Hindi film as my debut, it would probably be easy for me to relate to it. In the South, other than Vedam, I have not really done a film that was in the real space. I have always done little more commercial stuff. And now, I was doing something very real.
I felt comfortable wrapped in Armaan's arms
We were shooting in Chattisgarh and we would sit and look at the sun, trying to figure out what time of the day it is and decide when we were about to get our break time! We made our own language and it didnt take us long to become friends. In Goa, we were shooting a very intense, romantic scene, where Armaan and I were lying down together with the his arms wrapped around me.We had to hold that position because the cameras were shifted for different angles. I was having some random conversation with him and we were laughing about something. That day in the evening after the shoot, I realised that for a girl to be in that position with a guy and feel comfortable, secure and respected is something that takes a lot of time. Thats when I realised that Armaan is family to me.
Armaan and I pushed each other's limits
While I was into the process of unlearning, Armaan was learning as this is his first film. There were times when I thought I had achieved what I wanted to in a particular scene. But Armaan would be like no, and would push my limits. Sometimes, when he performed a scene, I would suggest that we look at it from a different perspective. And the fact that he has been an assistant director earlier and I have been an actor (and I still am, hopefully, if this movie does well), it helped us understand each others perspective.
Armaan said he will give me guest role in his first movie
Armaan has been an assistant director for three years. Also, he writes very well, he might make movies in the future. He told me that he will cast me in his first film as the lead, only if I am below 30! After that, he said itll only be a guest appearance!
Busting the movie myth
I had ideas of what working in movies will be like, which got busted the day I came into films. I never understood half the things. I was always confused about clothes that actors wore on screen, and how they changed so many times during a song sequence. After my first film, I was like Oh! God! All this is so not true! I remember that kiss I had with Bunny (Allu Arjun) in Vedam In the movies, when after such scenes, I would be like the actors are in love with each other. And suddenly, I was doing this scene with Bunny and there were 500 people around staring!
Not thinking about my next film now
I love romantic stories and action films. But I dont know if these are the genres I will get offered. Its too early to think about the next film because we have to wait and watch how LHDD does.
