King Charles has written privately to Donald Trump after the former US president survived an assassination attempt, Buckingham Palace has said.

The King is said to have privately messaged the former President yesterday and this message had been delivered via the US embassy.

The contents of such correspondence will remain private, but it is safe to surmise that the sentiments are in keeping with those communicated by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

During the PM's conversation with Trump, Starmer is said to have condemned the violence, expressed his condolences for the victims and their families and wished the former president and those injured a quick recovery.

On Saturday, the former US president was left bleeding from his ear after gunshots rang out at his Pennsylvania rally, with the Secret Service quickly rushing him off stage.

The tragic event occurred just days before Mr Trump was to accept the Republican presidential nomination.

On Saturday, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, opened fire at a rally before being killed by Secret Service.

Mr Crooks' political leanings weren't immediately clear, but records show he was registered as a Republican voter in Pennsylvania.

Back in 1994, the now-King also experienced his own failed assassination in Australia.

Following the incident, the former US President later took to social media to say he had only survived "thanks to God".

The 78-year-old was seen clutching the side of his head and dropping to the ground as the crowd screamed.
He was then rushed off the stage, before he gave a defiant fist-pump in the air.
One audience member was killed as the bullets rained down, while two others are in a critical condition.
