City students’ initiative to understand the life and struggle of sex workers

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, students and faculty members of a private engineering college moved beyond the four walls of the campus to stand beside the oppressed women of society. They paid a visit to the sex workers in the Sonagachi area in order to show solidarity with the marginalised women. A group of eight faculty members and ten students along with the registrar, Nidhi Singh, carried out the initiative.
Along with communicating and knowing about the life of the sex workers, the women's cell of the college even distributed sanitisers and masks to them and ran a health and hygiene campaign.Meanwhile, the students gave away chocolates and stationery items to the kids.
“We have all heard about the struggles and lives of the sex workers but hardly anyone of us ever saw it. So, this tour was life-changing for us. Beyond the stigma and the social taboo, we got to meet so many beautiful people. We salute their struggle and strong resolve,” said one of the students.
