  • Which corals will survive as ocean temperatures continue to rise? 🌊🥵 Experts from The Nature Conservancy, the Anne Cohen Lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Stanford University’s Stephen Palumbi Lab are leading a collaborative effort to discover which coral communities have the best chance of surviving reef-bleaching heatwaves so we can focus on protecting them. The Cohen Lab’s cutting-edge 3D hydrodynamic models predict where these so-called “super reefs” 🦸♂️🪸 might be located. Scientists then dive in to test the thermal tolerances of corals in these locations to test their super survival skills. One suspected “super reef” site is in Olowalu, Maui. Here, divers from TNC and the Palumbi Lab collect coral samples before bringing them back to Maui Ocean Center Marine Institue for testing with the help of local volunteers. The methods and results of this research will inform future community-led actions and protections for coral reefs in West Maui. • As we mark the one-year anniversary of the devastating fires that tore through Maui and Hawaiʻi and took 102 souls, we share in the kaumaha for the lives and livelihoods lost, ongoing grief and continued fear of new fires. We are moved by the resilience of community members who are committed to support each other in the long healing, recovery and rebuilding process. Last year’s tragedy was a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our ʻāina and communities and the urgent need for conservation efforts. This disaster was exacerbated by numerous environmental issues, including invasive brush and drought conditions driven by climate change. We seek political changes, improved fire management plans, resilient landscapes and better care for our natural and cultural resources to avoid future misfortune. We hold on to the promise of Hālau Lahaina, malu i ka ‘ulu as a source of hope and perseverance during the long process of recovery. This ‘ōlelo no‘eau, which compares Lahaina to a large house shaded by breadfruit trees, envisions a future of ‘ulu, ‘āina, kai and community flourishing once again in Lahaina. Our hearts and our efforts for restoration will continue in support of community partners, friends and family. #LahainaStrong #MauiStrong Nā Papalimu O Pi‘ilani along West Maui’s Lahaina coastline 📸: Maui Digital Images

  • 🪸 Coral restoration at Kealakekua Bay update 🪸 In the last two months, our dive team collected a total of 24 parent colonies of Porites lobata that broke off during recent storms or swells and would likely otherwise die. These colonies were then fragmented into 885 pieces which resulted in approximately 119 coral clusters, some of which were directly outplanted onto the reef, while others will continue to grow on our nursery table. During four volunteer events, 54 people supported this coral propagation pilot project, including local participants from Kealakekua Bay and some as far away as the U.S. Virgin Islands and Germany! Big mahalos to everyone who took the time to mālama ko‘a (care for corals) with us at Kealakekua Bay.
