Which corals will survive as ocean temperatures continue to rise? 🌊🥵 Experts from The Nature Conservancy, the Anne Cohen Lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Stanford University’s Stephen Palumbi Lab are leading a collaborative effort to discover which coral communities have the best chance of surviving reef-bleaching heatwaves so we can focus on protecting them. The Cohen Lab’s cutting-edge 3D hydrodynamic models predict where these so-called “super reefs” 🦸♂️🪸 might be located. Scientists then dive in to test the thermal tolerances of corals in these locations to test their super survival skills. One suspected “super reef” site is in Olowalu, Maui. Here, divers from TNC and the Palumbi Lab collect coral samples before bringing them back to Maui Ocean Center Marine Institue for testing with the help of local volunteers. The methods and results of this research will inform future community-led actions and protections for coral reefs in West Maui.
