  • Water is the thread that weaves us all together. From the rivers that nourish our lands to the oceans that connect our continents, water is life. 💧 The Great Lakes sustain 1.2 million jobs and 92% of the nation's agricultural exports in addition to providing critical habitat for migratory birds, native freshwater fish and more wildlife. That's why it's so vital that we work together this #WorldWaterWeek and beyond to protect the precious resources they provide for people and nature in the Midwest. Tonyisha Harris, Climate & Energy Program Manager for The Nature Conservancy in Illinois, had the pleasure of joining colleagues like James Page and countless other professionals earlier this month at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival. 📽 The festival honoring Black culture, talent and people in the film space and beyond took place at the beautiful Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts and featured celebrities like Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson and Sheryl Lee Ralph and countless other artists. The Nature Conservancy was eager to amplify and introduce filmgoers to Germaine Jenkins, a Black farmer seeking liberation through food systems in her film "Rooted". Tonyisha shares, "It was my first time attending and I got the chance to connect with so many talented filmmakers and professionals. I was in awe of the film festival and grateful to network with my community." Listen to the whole video to hear more about the conversations she had with attendees about climate change, its impacts on The Nature Conservancy in Massachusetts' Hoft Farm, Martha's Vineyard and Chicago alike, and her reflections on the festival and her own work in the climate space. 📹 Tonyisha Harris/TNC #MVAAFF #ClimateChange

  • “It can be very intimidating to get into fire, especially as there’s this culture of: You have to be very macho. You have to be very strong and physically fit and mentally fit. And while that’s partially true, we need people with diverse experiences, diverse ideas, to be able to address the issues within organizations in meaningful ways." Thank you to WGLT for putting the spotlight on Meredith Brown, TNC Illinois' first ever Women in Fire Coordinator. We're so excited to have Meredith on board and can't wait to see her vision for the Women in Fire program come to life. Read the full article to hear more about Meredith's goals for the program. https://nature.ly/4cJ4BPo #GoodFire #Conservation #Nature #SaturdaySouthernILSpotlight

  • Some good Great Lakes news for your Thursday: Lake Michigan made the number four spot on a recent USA Today 10 Best list of the greatest lakes in the country! As the largest lake on Earth to reside solely in one country, Lake Michigan provides so much for people and nature. It holds about 22% of all of the planet's freshwater and provides drinking water to over 10 million people. The lake's 1,600 miles of shoreline also serves as critical habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife, not to mention the countless freshwater fish residing under the waves. The next time you’re enjoying the beauty of Lake Michigan, remember, it’s not just a lake; it’s a thriving ecosystem supporting life and livelihoods for millions. 💧🌿 Dive into The Nature Conservancy's work to protect our precious Great Lakes: https://lnkd.in/e2g5MXNA 📸 Laura Stoecker

  • Help the Illinois Department of Natural Resources protect wild turkeys! 🦃 Community scientists are invited to assist with wild turkey surveys to help biologists monitor population trends. Volunteers are asked to report young turkeys, adult females, and adult males with every observation, as well as the county and date of the observation through the rest of this month. And with that, my time as a 2024 volunteer for Chicago Piping Plovers has come to an end. This summer, I volunteered with "Chicago Piping Plovers" - a conservation collaboration between the Chicago Bird Alliance, Chicago Ornithological Society, and Illinois Ornithological Society to monitor the endangered Piping Plovers at Montrose beach. Kudos to all the partners and people who worked to protect the plovers this year, including partners at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Chicago Park District, and Illinois Department of Natural Resources. And most of all, the biggest thank you to Tamima Itani, the Lead Volunteer Coordinator for CPP for balancing a slew of responsibilities related to partner collaboration and mentoring volunteers like me. I will miss my Monday morning, 6-8AM monitoring shifts at the beach. When I'd tell people about my volunteering, many would exclaim "How could you wake up so early to do that, especially on a work day?" My answer is the reason I'm posting here on LinkedIn. Watching the sunrise every morning in its orange-yellow hue, seeing rare birds like Whimbrels, Upland Sandpipers, and even a Western Kingbird, and knowing I was giving my time to protect a bird that deserves to thrive just as much as the rest of us. Before I began my role at The Nature Conservancy in Illinois, these types of volunteering opportunities kept my focus sharply on finding a career in the environmental field. This activity is what both inspires me to do my job and also replenishes me when work can get heavy. I'll never forget where I came from. Imani and Sea Rocket, the parent Piping Plovers, incubated and hatched 4 chicks, with 1 surviving. Both parents have flown south for the wintering season, and we believe their surviving chick, named Nagamo (which means “he/she sings” in the Ojibwe language), headed south a few days ago, too. Good luck my dear friends, and thank you for the joy you've added to the lives of countless Chicagoans and nature lovers this summer. ☀ Candid photo credit of my scanning of the beach to Jennifer Walling! Rest of photos were taken by me. #Conservation #EndangeredSpecies #Volunteering #WorkLifeBalance

  • As summer comes to a close, our Southern Illinois team is sending off Emily Holtrop, a seasonal restoration technician who was instrumental to our stewardship work over the last few months. Emily was a huge help during this busy summer season helping to remove and manage invasive species. She shares, "I can't think of a better place to start my natural resources career than with TNC. The relationships that I've developed during my time here are a great foundation for the future, and I'm so proud of the work we accomplished together. I'm so lucky to have been a part of this team!" Emily will return to her studies as a Forestry major at SIUC this fall to continue her conservation career. Thank you for all your help this summer, Emily! 📸 Emily Holtrop #Conservation #Careers
