Underestimating the Sagebrush Sea is a common mistake. 🌾 Too many of us overlook it, distracted by the West’s more boldly charismatic landscapes. ⛰ But our indifference is costing us. The Sagebrush Sea, found over 150 million acres across 13 U.S. western states (including Montana!), is under threat from invasive grasses, leading to more frequent wildfires and loss of habitat. But there’s hope! The Nature Conservancy, USDA Agricultural Research Service, National Park Service, and Germains Seed Technology are teaming up to test solutions to fight back against invasive annual grasses in this unique landscape. 🌱 Our innovative seed coating technology hopes to give native plants a fighting chance. Shout-out to the awesome volunteers who removed a mile of old barbed-wire fence on Nature Conservancy in the Blackfoot Valley last week! Our friends at Backcountry Hunters & Anglers hosted the fence pull, which involved hard climbing over steep terrain. Conservation and hunting groups recognize the importance of removing obsolete barbed-wire fence that can entangle and kill wildlife or impede crucial migration routes for elk, deer and other species. Thanks to everyone who came out (and the local businesses who fueled up the volunteers) for making this important habitat safer for wildlife! Simple rock and brush structures, built along streams, can create wet meadows where wildlife and native plants can thrive. These low-cost structures can absolutely transform the land.
